Ready for Winter Checklist (October 21, 2001): Now is the time to
get ready for winter. Print this list and check them off so youre
ready for winter. While youre
cleaning your gutters check your roof closely. Look closely for cracking
or curling shingles, as this is a good sign of wear. An excessive amount
of gravel in the gutter also indicates an aging roof. Keep track of these
roof-wear signs and start budgeting for a new roof a couple years in advance.
Don't wait until the roof leaks and causes other damage before you decide
to replace it. Furnace filters should
be replaced regularly and should always be done at the beginning of the
heating season. You should replace the furnace filter at least once a
month if youre using the cheep fiberglass filters. If you have allergies,
you may want to use one of the pleated high efficiently filters. Some
of the better ones can last up to 3 months. If you have kids and a lot
of activity in your home, keep an eye on your filters. Dirty filters are
hard on the heating system and better filters are worth the extra money. Check all windows
and doors for proper operation and make sure all your storm widows are
in place. Make sure the storm doors are in place and working; inspect
the weather stripping around doors for wear. Most of this stripping is
easily replaced and it can save a lot on energy bills. Get any cracked
or broken windows repaired now. This is also a good time to take get your
screens repaired so they will be ready next spring. Where is your snow shovel? Is it worn out or broken? Now is the time to replace it or invest in a new or used snow blower.
