Roof Repair

When was the last time you checked your roof? Our roofs are one of the most over looked parts of our house, yet the most important. The roof protects your whole house and its contents. A water leak can cause a lot of damage. Shingles start to age the day they are put on the roof. It will start with some of the mineral granules coming loose and the shingle may even curl, or cup slightly. Some of this is normal and the shingle soon settles into a long middle age period. As shingles near the end of their lives, the deterioration accelerates and all of a sudden you have a leak and unexpected expense of a new roof. When there are more granules in the gutter than on the roof, you have large cracks, or the shingles curl severely, it is time to replace the roofing. If you don't like to get on ladders take a pair of binoculars and look at your roof for missing shingles, curling, and other damage. This will give you some idea of the condition of your roof. It is still best to get up on the roof and look it over or at the very least stand on the ladder and look the roof over. Do this on all sides of the house since one side may be in better shape then another. Sometimes you will have hail or wind damage that you did not know about, so always check your roof after any hail or wind storm. Most shingles have a 15 to 25 year lifespan. If you need to replace your roof, find a good quality shingle from a roofing supplier. You will find a better shingle than you will get at most big chain home improvement centers. Roofing is hard work, so you owe it to yourself to get materials that will last. While you are at it check your attic ventilation and improve it at the same time. We’ll give you a tip for how to do that next week.
