Painting Cement (July 22, 2001): How do you make paint stick to cement? The most important thing before you paint any surface is to prepare it properly. If you have cement that has been painted before, make sure you remove all loose paint and clean the surface well, getting all the dirt, oil, and soap cleaned off. If the surface has not been painted before, clean it first and then wash it with a mixture of maritime acid (read cautions on label, the acid will burn your skin, eyes, and lungs if not used properly) and water. Use 1/3 maritime acid with 2/3 water and wash the surface thoroughly, rinsing with clear water. This will etch the cement so the paint will stick properly and last. Do not begin painting until the surface is completely dry. You can paint the foundation on your house, basement floor, cement steps, or any cement surface inside or outside. Use a good quality oil or latex based floor and deck enamel paint. I prefer oil base to latex. Also use a good brush or roller. Don't go cheep on the paint or brush or the paint job will not last. If youre painting an area where the surface is slick, put in a nonstop additive in the paint and mix well. Always follow label directions and have plenty of ventilation when using acids or paints. The extra work you do to do it right will be worth it!
